Sunday Morning Music vol. 15 - October Sky

For this Sunday Morning Music installment I used almost all brand new music.  16 of the 19 tracks are from 2017 & most of those are from the last two months.  Two cuts are from 2016.

One outlier is from all the way back in 1999.  That track is October Sky by Mark Isham.  As I was putting the mix together I came up with the title of vol. 15 - October Sky(cuz it's October) and thought that it sounded familiar.  I searched my hard drive and sure enough I found October Sky is a soundtrack by Mark Isham from 1999.  BTW, it's an excellent movie.  So I had to include that one old track in with all the new ones.

Also sorry for this not being uploaded on a Sunday morning.  Brunch with the kids took priority, then football, the nap.  So here it is on Sunday evening.

Cheers!

Sunday Morning Music vol. 14 - Early Bird

I haven't done a Sunday morning mix in quite a while so volume 14 solves that problem.

This follows the usual Sunday morning mix template of a few vocal tunes, some ambient tunes and a bit of jazz.  I was happy to finally use Shenandoah in a mix.  More than a year ago I was at a local high school spring concert and fell in love with the concert band version of this tune.  I know it may sound out of place in a Low Light mix but I think it's beauty fits well with the Sunday morning series.

In addition to Shenandoah there is new music from Hite, Grails, The Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society, Clocolan and fairly new music from Radiohead & Olafur Arnalds.  And a nice old classic from Max Roach & Clifford Brown.

Cheers!

Sunday Morning Music vol. 12 - September's Here Again

As usual with these mixes there is one song in particular that gets the ball rolling and in this case it's the title track from the album The Thompson Fields by the Maria Schneider Orchestra.  The whole album is wonderful collection open, airy jazz tracks and the title song is just stunning.  Definitely one of the most beautiful songs released this year, second only to Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell.

The rest of the mix is your standard Sunday morning mix.  Maybe a bit more jazz in this one.  Other than the Davis Sylvian tune most of the cuts are fairly new.

Enjoy

Sunday Morning Music vol. 11 - Morning Moon

Here's the latest Sunday Morning Music installment. The mix starts with cuts from two of my fav albums of 2015 by Aero Flynn & Sufjan Stevens.

Aero Flynn is fronted by Josh Scott, a product of the same Eau Claire, Wisconsin music scene that gave us Justin Vernon(Bon Iver).  Scott was in a band called Amateur Love that shared a couple of members with a band that Vernon was in, DeYarmond Edison.  According to Chris Porterfield, who was in DeYarmond & would later form Field Report, Josh Scott was the most talented guy in that scene.

Just as Amateur Love was about to break Josh Scott got spooked and broke up the band and fled to Chicago.  Since then he has flirted with comebacks but mental and physical illness always got in the way.

Now he is back with a fantastic new album released this past spring.  The record was recorded in Justin Vernon's Eau Claire studio and was produced by Vernon.  The sound is very different from Amateur Love, more electronics involved, the vocals more ethereal.  The best way to describe the music is a cross between Radiohead & Bon Iver.

The Amateur Love album was re-released in 2012 by Vernon.  He started his own record company just so he could release that album.  And it's a wonderful recording, so full of promise.  I wish there had been more.

Here are some links related to the Aero Flynn story...

The other track that opens this mix is from Sufjan Stevens & his amazing new album, Carrie & Lowell.  The entire album is about dealing with the death of his mother.  Yes, some of the tunes are sad but all of them are beautiful, each in it's own way.

I saw him perform the entire album live back in April & it was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen.  A friend described it as transcendent.

After those opening cuts it's all downhill. Haha.  Actually there is much more good music in the rest of the mix.  Most of it is new & it fits with the laid back Sunday morning feel of past mixes.

Enjoy

Sunday Morning Music vol. 10 - To Heal

Here's the latest in the Sunday Morning Music series.  And as usual it follows a similar path to its predecessors - little bit of quiet vocals, little bit of jazz, little bit of classical, little bit of everything.

The first track in the mix is from DeYarmond Edison, which is Justin Vernon's first band from 2005.  Vernon is the man behind Bon Iver.  He's a fellow Wisconsonite that hit the big time with his For Emma album back in 2007.  I discovered the DeYarmond Edison album while doing some Bon Iver research and found that it is an excellent album.  Vernon is also a member of Volcano Choir, which has a cut in this mix as well.  I have a Justin Vernon mix in the works.  It will feature his music along with music from the many artists he has connections with.

As much as I like that first track, the highlight of this mix for me is the Kate Bush tune, Snowflake, from her wonderful album, 50 Words for Snow.  She sings the song from the point of view of a snowflake,  I only used about half of the song in the mix.

A couple of others favorite tunes in this mix are Ladder in Place from rf, very bright and happy.  I have always loved the Underworld cut, To Heal and used it as part of the title for this installment of the Sunday series.  And finally, the Daryll Hall tune at the end from his offbeat collaboration with Robert Fripp is another fav.

Other mixes on the horizon include a space rock mix, ambient dub, breathing, time dilation, Americana,  sea music and the previously mentioned Justin Vernon Family Tree mix.

Enjoy
